RHS Harlow Carr
RHS Harlow Carr is the northernmost of Englands four Royal Horticultural Society Gardens. Harlow Carr Gardens coves 68 acres, and are set in a valley. The garden has a wide variety of growing landscapes, from running and still water to woodland and wildflower meadows. Acidic soil affords a fabulous environment for rhododendrons and Himalayan blue poppies. Harlow Carr has cold, drying winter winds, deep frosts, a cooler, shorter growing season and lots of wet weather, compared with the oher Royal Horticultrual gardens! These challenges to the gardens have allowed the gareners at Harlow Carr to provide some unique areas and a different perspective on gardens.
Highlights in the garden include:
The stream runs through almost the entire length of the gardens, trees provide shelter and some shade, moisture loving plants combine with those prefering drier conditions further up the banks.
Recognising the RHS Grow Your Campaign, Harlow Carr has an extensive kitchen garden with fruit, vegetables and herbs.
Gardens Through Time
Seven gardens have been created to demonstrate the changes in gardening over the past 200 years. The gardens do not reflect those of stately homes and the upper classes, rathr the middle classes.
Throughout the gardens are play areas and points of interest for children, from a treehouse in the woods, to a maze to a more convetional playground.
