Castle Howard Stately home was built by a member of the Howard family over 300 years ago and is still the family residence. Enjoy the Baroque interiors with a tour of the house, children can enjoy a tour with Geoffery the Lions illustrated trail.

The gardens of Castle Howard are extensive and diverse, with formal gardens and a walled garden merging to become a wider parkland. There are a number of buildings within the grounds including the Temple of the Four Winds and the Mausoleum. For walks on the wilder side head into Ray Wood, a 25 acre woodland which has been restored to an English woodland garden with the Yorkshire Arboretum.

During the school holidays and some weekends there are boat cruises available on the Great Lake, providing wildlife spotting opportunities and great views of the house.

Opening Times

The house is open daily until 30th October 2016, it then opens for Christmas period from 19th November to 23rd December. The house is closed to the public from 24th December to 8th April 2017.

The gardens and grounds are open to the public throughout the year with the exception of Christmas.

Some facilities may be closed in low season.


All car parking is on hard standing and blue badge bays are available. Most paths are hard surface, gravel or cut grass and are suitable for wheelchair users, except Ray Wood which has natural and uneven paths.
A stairlift in the house gives wheelchair users access to the upper floor, the High South, Chapel and parts of the exhibition wing are inaccessible.
The Kelly Car land train travels between the ticket office, the boathouse and the adventure playground, it can accommodate wheelchairs and the driver can assist with boarding and disembarking.
Manual wheelchairs are available for visitors. Assistance dogs are welcome. The stable courtyard, house and boathouse cafe have adapted toilet facilities.
