Pickering Castle is a Norman Motte and Bailey castle originally built by William the Conqueror. The castle is a short (uphill) walk from town city and provides panoramic views across North Yorkshire.
The structure of the castle is well preserved, with the defensive wall and towers in tact. The Keep including the Kings room and chapel are also in good condition. The chapel houses an exhibition. During it's former life the Castle has acted as a hunting lodge, stud farm and holiday home to a succession of medieval kings.
