National Coal Mining Museum For England
The National Coal Mining Museum offers a great day out for all ages come rain or shine. The Underground Tour travels 140m below into the coal mine using the original mine shaft and lift. The tour that follows is an exciting and unique view into the life of a miner at work. The Museum explores the history of the mines from the beginning through to the prominent strikes of the 1980's through to the subsequent closure of many mines.
You can met the pit ponies and many of the former buildings have been opened with interactive displays detailling everything from children in the mines to communication from mine to surface.
A section of the site has been transformed into a nature trail where you can enjoy some peace and tranquiltity and the kids can left off some steam.

Entry to the Museum is FREE
Underground Tours: £3.00 refundable charge.
