Jorvik Viking Centre
The Jorvik Viking Centre allows visitors to journey through the reconstruction of Viking-Age streets as they would have looked 1000 years ago. Travel on board the time machine to a viking settlement. See a Viking blacksmith furnace, the lives of the fishers, farmers and families of the era.
The exhibition is based completely on archaeological facts – from the layout of the houses, the working craftsmen, the language of the gossiping neighbours, to the smells of cooking and the cesspit! Be warned Jorvik is a multi sensory museum and viking life didn't also smell too good!
Newly commissioned studies of a viking female have allowed the centre to produce information on the diseases, diet and afflictions of of the people.
All aspects of life are covered from jewellery to weapons, and the effect of the vikings on our lives today.
