Malton is a historic market town, and is the historic centre of Ryedale. The area was previously a Roman fort and a wooden Norman castle was built in the 11th century.

Nowadays the town has a population of approx. 4000, and is home to a host of small independent shops, cafes and coffee bars. The town has hosts a literature festival and food festival.
