Wakefield has a long and varied history. As the location of a battle in the War of the Roses and a royalist stronghold during the Civil War, it gained importance as an inland port during the Industrial revolution due to the navigable river Calder. Wakefield's newest attraction (opened in May 2011) is the Hepworth Museum, described as a landmark gallery for the visual arts. the Yorkshire sculpture Park is also nearby. Nostell Priory is a National Trust building and has 14 state rooms, and many fine examples of Chippendale furniture.
With one of the regions most prestigous galleries, The Hepworth, the National Coal Mining Museum and the nearby Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield has a strong claim as the cultural capital of Yorkshire.
