If you’re looking for a family-friendly day out that combines animal encounters, environmental education, and a genuine community feel—all without breaking the bank—Heeley City Farm is a Sheffield must-visit.

Located just a mile from Sheffield city centre, this four-acre organic farm and rare breeds centre is a remarkable example of community spirit. Once a site destined to be a bypass, it was reclaimed by locals in 1981 and transformed into the thriving green haven it is today.

Meet the Residents: Animals & Rare Breeds

The farm is a certified Rare Breeds Farm Park, meaning many of the animals you’ll meet here are endangered native breeds. It’s a fantastic place for children (and adults!) to learn about biodiversity while getting up close to some friendly faces.

  • Rare Breed Farmyard Friends: A whole range of traditional farm yard animals, many of which are rare breeds, helping to protect Britain's Living Heritage. Including Tamworth Pigs, Bagot Goats, White Woodland Sheep and Derbyshire Redcap Chickens.
  • Small Animal House: Where you can find rabbits, guinea pigs, and even a few more exotic residents like lizards and degu.
  • Bird Life: Keep an eye out for the ducks on the pond, scratching hens, and the farm’s majestic resident peacock.

Things To See And Do

Beyond the animals, Heeley City Farm is packed with "hidden gems" and educational corners:

  • Iron Age Roundhouse: A fascinating reconstruction that brings Sheffield’s ancient history to life.
  • The Gardens: Explore the peat-free garden centre, the wildlife gardens, and the sensory "Valerie Garden"—a calm space designed specifically for peace and reflection.
  • Play Area: A dedicated playground for children under 8, perfect for letting off steam after visiting the animals.

Eat & Shop

The Farm Kitchen is the on-site café, providing a range of home-cooked, vegetarian, and vegan-friendly meals. Using locally sourced produce, it serves everything from hearty hot lunches to delicious cakes and great coffee.

The Farm Shop offers a showcase of the wonderful produce, plants, animal supplies, and unique, handcrafted gifts available to purchase directly from the farm.
