Located just two miles north of Leeds city centre, Meanwood Valley Urban Farm is a vibrant 24-acre working farm, community hub, and registered charity. Established in 1980 on land steeped in local agricultural history, it offers inner-city families and visitors a genuine slice of rural life.

Last Visited:We haven't visited Meanwood Urban Valley Farm yet, at just £3 for adults and 50p for children, it’s easily one of the best-value family hours out in West Yorkshire. The combination of friendly livestock, winding woodland walks, sustainable market gardens, and cakes at The Barn Coffee Shop must make it a fantastic, stress-free morning or afternoon escape.
Highlights / What to See 🐑
Whether you are visiting with young toddlers or looking for a peaceful nature walk, the farm packs plenty of variety across its 24 acres:
- Meet the Farm Animals: Say hello to alpacas, pigs, goats, sheep (including rare Ryeland breeds), Dexter cattle, donkeys, ducks, and chickens roaming the open paddocks.
- Small Animals Area: Located right opposite the cafe area, this shelter houses rabbits and guinea pigs.
- Eco-Friendly "EpiCentre": An award-winning, turf-roofed timber building constructed using low-energy self-build techniques, featuring educational displays on environmental sustainability and local history.
- Market Garden & Orchard: Walk around chemical-free growing beds, poly-tunnels, and orchards that produce fresh veg boxes for the local community.
- Woodland & Stream Trails: Explore paths following Meanwood Beck, passing through Shire Wood and natural wildlife habitats ideal for birdwatching.
The Barn Coffee Shop ☕
Housed on-site, this cozy cafe serves delicious specialty coffees, loose-leaf teas, freshly baked cakes, and light lunch options. Profits directly support the farm charity, and outdoor seating is available overlooking the grounds.

Opening Hours
Open daily 7 days a week from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM (Cafe open until 4:00 PM).
Dog Friendly
Well-behaved dogs are welcome throughout the farm grounds provided they are kept on a short lead.
Café & Picnic Area
The Barn Coffee Shop on-site. Outdoor picnic tables are also provided for visitors bringing packed lunches.
Accessibility
Main pathways, visitor centers, cafe, and toilets are wheelchair and stroller friendly. Some woodland tracks can get muddy in wet weather.

🚗 By Car & Parking
Free visitor parking is available directly on-site via the Sugar Well Road entrance off Meanwood Road. Overspill parking is available on surrounding residential streets.
🚌 By Bus / Public Transport
Frequent buses (including First Bus routes 7, 7A, 7S, and 51/52) run regularly from Leeds City Centre along Meanwood Road and Scott Hall Road, stopping just a 3 to 5-minute walk from the main gate.
