Located just two miles north of Leeds city centre, Meanwood Valley Urban Farm is a vibrant 24-acre working farm, community hub, and registered charity. Established in 1980 on land steeped in local agricultural history, it offers inner-city families and visitors a genuine slice of rural life.

We haven't visited Meanwood Urban Valley Farm yet, at just Β£3 for adults and 50p for children, it’s easily one of the best-value family hours out in West Yorkshire. The combination of friendly livestock, winding woodland walks, sustainable market gardens, and cakes at The Barn Coffee Shop must make it a fantastic, stress-free morning or afternoon escape.

Whether you are visiting with young toddlers or looking for a peaceful nature walk, the farm packs plenty of variety across its 24 acres:

  • Meet the Farm Animals: Say hello to alpacas, pigs, goats, sheep (including rare Ryeland breeds), Dexter cattle, donkeys, ducks, and chickens roaming the open paddocks.
  • Small Animals Area: Located right opposite the cafe area, this shelter houses rabbits and guinea pigs.
  • Eco-Friendly "EpiCentre": An award-winning, turf-roofed timber building constructed using low-energy self-build techniques, featuring educational displays on environmental sustainability and local history.
  • Market Garden & Orchard: Walk around chemical-free growing beds, poly-tunnels, and orchards that produce fresh veg boxes for the local community.
  • Woodland & Stream Trails: Explore paths following Meanwood Beck, passing through Shire Wood and natural wildlife habitats ideal for birdwatching.
