The Lighthouse In The Middle of Town

When you think of a lighthouse, you probably imagine a lonely tower perched on a jagged cliff, miles away from civilization. Withernsea Lighthouse is different. Standing tall in the middle of a residential street, it’s one of the few lighthouses in the UK that is completely surrounded by a town.

Whether you’re a history buff, a photography enthusiast, or just looking for a unique coastal day trip, this inland beacon has plenty to offer.

Conquer The Climb

The main event is, of course, the climb. It takes 144 steps to reach the top, but the effort is well worth it. Once you step out onto the gallery, you’re treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the Yorkshire Coast and the sprawling town below. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Humber Bridge.

A Tribute To A Local Legend

The lighthouse isn't just about maritime history; it’s also a shrine to 1950s film star Kay Kendall, who was born in Withernsea. The ground floor houses a dedicated museum celebrating her life and career. It’s a touch of Hollywood glamour in a traditional seaside setting.

Maritime and Local History Museum

Before you head up the stairs, take some time to explore the various rooms at the base. You’ll find:

  • RNLI Exhibits: Learn about the brave souls who have patrolled these shores.
  • The History Of The Lights: See how the lighthouse operated before it was decommissioned in 1976.
  • Seasonal Exhibits: The museum often hosts local art and historical displays that vary throughout the season.

The Inland Novelty

There is something inherently charming about a lighthouse that sits roughly quarter of a mile from the actual sea. Originally built in 1894 to prevent ships from crashing into the treacherous coast, the town simply grew around it. It makes for some fantastic, slightly surreal photos for your Instagram feed.

Garden and Cafe

Enjoy a break in the gardens after your visit, perhaps with a little drink or snack from the on-site cafe. There's a treasure hunt for children to find the model animals and sculptures.
