Posted 21st March 2026
If you’re looking for a day out in Leeds that combines industrial heritage with family-friendly fun, look no further than Middleton Railway. Established in 1758, it holds the title of the world’s oldest continuously working railway. Originally built to haul coal into the heart of Leeds, it now serves as a beautifully preserved heritage line run by dedicated volunteers.
What To Expect:
Your journey begins at the Moor Road Headquarters, just two miles from Leeds City Centre.
- The Engine House Museum: Explore the display hall and get up close to historic Leeds-built locomotives. You can even climb into engine cabs and see a "cutaway" boiler that reveals the inner physics of steam power.
- The Journey: Board a vintage carriage for a nostalgic trip to Park Halt. The train passes under the M621, offering a fun contrast between the modern city and old-world travel.
