The Sheffield Lunar Chinese New Year Festival is back for 2026, and this year, we are galloping into the Year of the Horse!
For over two decades, Sheffield has hosted one of the UK’s premier Lunar New Year celebrations. Whether you’re a foodie, a fan of traditional dance, or just looking for a fantastic family day out, the Steel City is the place to be this February.
A Glow of Hope: Hospital Light Switch-On
- When: Monday 16th February 2026, 4:30 to 6pm
- Where: Sheffield Children's Hospital

For the fourth year running, the Sheffield Children’s Hospital will be illuminated by a spectacular dragon and lantern display.The hospital will glow with colours, featuring a dragon projection on the wall. The switch-on event itself is a joyful community gathering, featuring a lively Lion Dance performance designed to bring smiles, luck, and positive energy to the young patients, their families, and the incredible NHS staff.
🏮 The Big Weekend: City Centre Festival

- Where: Peace Gardens & City Centre

The heart of the celebration takes place in the Peace Gardens. Expect a sensory explosion of sights and sounds. The iconic Lion and Dragon dances are the stars of the show, weaving through the crowds to the beat of traditional drums. You’ll find stalls selling authentic street food, traditional crafts, and plenty of activities for the kids. It’s the perfect way to soak up the atmosphere and learn about the traditions of the Lunar New Year.
🛍️ Meadowhall Extravaganza

Try Chinese calligraphy, learning how to use brush and ink to create characters or craft bright and colourful lanterns that symbolise hope, luck and new beginnings for the Year of the Horse. Plus on the evening of Friday 20th February don’t miss the world-famous Foshan Lion Dance Troupe, returning to Sheffield for the second time! Watch their stunning lion dance and join them in celebrating a tradition that brings good fortune, prosperity and happiness for the year ahead on. 18:30 to 19:30 in the Lower Oasis.
🎭 The Octagon Spectacular

This ticketed evening event showcases incredible performances, from breathtaking acrobatics and martial arts to classical Chinese music and dance. It’s a high-energy evening that truly captures the spirit of the Horse—strength, energy, and grace.
