An Enchanted Weekend of Ice Sculptures and Family Fun

When the winter chill settles over the cobblestones of York, the city doesn’t retreat indoors. Instead, it transforms into a shimmering gallery of frozen art. The York Ice Trail is returning for February 7th and 8th, 2026, and this year’s theme—"An Enchanted City"—promises to be the most magical edition yet.

Whether you’re a local or planning a weekend getaway, here is everything you need to know about Yorkshire’s coolest outdoor event.

The Theme: An Enchanted City

Every year, the York Ice Trail takes on a new identity, and for 2026, the streets will be populated by mythical creatures, fairy-tale legends, and mystical wonders. Organizers have teased over 30 bespoke ice sculptures scattered throughout the city centre, all carved from crystal-clear ice.

New for 2026: The Ice Village

Step into the Ice Village - a brand new addition filled with family-friendly fun and themed traders offering magical delights. Make sure to book a place on one of the Ice Carving Masterclasses and learn how to carve a polar bear!

Watch the Magic Happen: Live Carving

If you’ve ever wondered how a massive block of ice becomes a delicate work of art, head over to St Sampson’s Square. Throughout the weekend, live carving demonstrations will take place. Watching the artists use chainsaws and chisels to reveal a sculpture in a spray of ice crystals is a highlight for kids and adults alike.

Interactive Fun & Photo Ops

There are plenty of opportunities to take photos with the ice sculptures and enjoy interactive experiences. Families can pose with the ice art, and there are special photo opportunities set up throughout the trail.

MAke A Day Of It

The best part? The York Ice Trail is completely FREE. It’s a fantastic way to explore York’s historic streets—from the Shambles to the Minster—without spending a penny on tickets.
