Under the Stars: Why You Can’t Miss Yorkshire’s Dark Skies Festival 2026

Sky trail at the Dark Skies Festival

Posted on 24th January 2026

As the sun sets early over the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales and the rugged heather moorland of the North York Moors, a different kind of magic begins. Away from the orange glow of city lights, these two National Parks hold a prestigious title: International Dark Sky Reserves.

From February 13th to March 1st, 2026, the Dark Skies Festival returns for its 11th year, inviting you to look up and rediscover the wonder of a truly dark night. Whether you’re a serious astronomer or a family looking for a half-term adventure, here is why this celestial celebration is a must-visit.

Two Parks, One Giant Celestial Playground
Yorkshire is unique in having two Dark Sky Reserves side-by-side. During the festival, the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors join forces to host hundreds of events. Because there is so little light pollution here, you can see up to 2,000 stars at once, the Milky Way in all its glory, and even the occasional Aurora Borealis if the conditions are right.

Adventure After Dark
This isn’t just about looking through telescopes (though there’s plenty of that!). The festival is famous for its "active" night-time events:

  • Canoe under the stars: Glide across still waters in the Dales for a perspective of the sky you can't get from land.
  • Ziplining & Running:Experience a rush of adrenaline at Go Ape Dalby Forest or join a guided night trail run through the woods.
  • Starlit Walks:Follow expert guides to iconic spots like Malham Cove or Sutton Bank to hear stories of the constellations.

Family Half-Term Fun
Coinciding with the February half-term, the festival is packed with kid-friendly activities. Look out for:

  • Planet TrailsWalk the self-guided trails at Aysgarth Falls or the Dales Way, where you can "walk" the distance between planets in our solar system.
  • Rocket Making: Creative workshops where future astronauts can build and launch their own crafts.
  • Nocturnal Wildlife: Discover the "hidden" side of the parks with owl prowls and talks about the creatures that wake up when we go to sleep.

New for 2026: The Danby Lodge Dark Skies Station
This year is extra special for the North York Moors as they celebrate the opening of the brand-new Dark Skies Station at Danby Lodge. This dedicated observatory will host "Astro Dog" stargazing sessions, providing high-tech equipment to peer deep into distant nebulae and star clusters.

Mindful Moments
If you prefer a slower pace, the festival offers "Mindful Stargazing" and "Dark Skies Yoga." There is something profoundly grounding about sitting in total darkness, breathing in the cold moorland air, and realizing just how vast our universe really is.
