See the Flying Scotsman at the National Railway Museum
The Return OF A Legend.
Posted on 15th March 2026
It is the most famous steam locomotive in the world, a feat of British engineering, and the first engine to officially hit 100mph. This spring, the Flying Scotsman returns to York for a special residency at the National Railway Museum.
Whether you have a young "Thomas" fan in the family, you’re a lifelong rail enthusiast, or you’re just looking for a unique (and free!) day out in York, seeing the Scotsman in the steel is an experience you won't forget.
🗓️ When and Where to See The Flying Scotsman:
The Flying Scotsman will be the guest of honour at the National Railway Museum this spring.
- Location:

- Opening Hours:
- Cost: Entry to the museum is FREE, however booking is recommended. There is high demand to visit when the Flying Scotsman is in town and the museum does reach capacity.

✨ What to Expect: The Scotsman Experience
Seeing the Flying Scotsman isn't just about looking at a train; it’s about feeling the history.
- The Sight: Dressed in her iconic Brunswick Green livery, the locomotive is a masterclass in power and elegance.
- The Flying Scotsman VR Experience: Be immersed in the world of Flying Scotsman with our VR Experience, which will even give you a toasty feeling as you venture inside the firebox. (additional cost)
- Photo-Ops: The Scotsman position on the turntable in The Great Hall will allow lots of selfie ops.
🚂 What Else Can You Enjoy at the Museum?
The National Railway Museum is massive, and even without the Scotsman, it’s a full day of discovery.
- The Royal Carriage Collection: Walk alongside the "Palaces on Wheels." See the opulent carriages used by Queen Victoria and King Edward VII—it’s like Downton Abbey on tracks.
- Mallard and The Giants: tand next to the Mallard, the world’s fastest steam locomotive, and marvel at the scale of the Chinese locomotive in the Great Hall.
- Wonderlab: The Bramall Gallery: An absolute must for families. This interactive space lets kids (and big kids!) get hands-on with the engineering marvels behind the railway. (Extra Charge)
- The Miniature Railway: For a small extra charge, take a ride on the outdoor miniature railway—a huge hit with toddlers and younger children.
🍴 Food, Drink & Practicalities
You won’t go hungry in the dale! There are two iconic stops along the route:
- Dining: Enjoy a meal in the Central Hall Cafe or grab a quick bite at the Station Hall coffee shop, often situated right next to the historic carriages.
- Picnic Area: There are designated indoor and outdoor picnic areas if you prefer to bring your own "railway rations."
- Accessibility: The museum is fully accessible, with ramps and lifts available. The Scotsman display is designed to be enjoyed by all visitors.
- Getting There: It is just a 10-minute signposted walk from York Railway Station. If you’re driving, follow signs for the museum's dedicated car park (charges apply). Or arrive in style on the Land Train. Travel Information For The Railway Museum
