The Ayton Scarecrow Festival returns to the picturesque twin villages of West Ayton and East Ayton this August, continuing a beloved seasonal highlight on the edge of the North York Moors. For over a week, the community unifies to pack front gardens, driveways, and wall tops with dozens of creative, hand-stuffed characters.

Running from Saturday 15th to Sunday 23rd August 2026, the festival provides a brilliant, low-cost community trail that showcases everything from pop-culture caricatures to ingenious mechanical displays, all while raising vital funding for local community projects, youth groups, and village institutions.

The event spans both sides of the historic stone bridge crossing the River Derwent. As you traverse the paths linking East and West Ayton, you'll discover a brilliant exhibition of dry Yorkshire humour and crafting skill that will keep both eagle-eyed sleuths and casual walkers thoroughly amused.

The Ayton villages are located right on the A170, about 3 miles inland from Scarborough and 4 miles from Forge Valley. To keep the narrow residential avenues clear for emergency services and local residents, visitors are asked to avoid on-street parking. Designated event parking hubs are signposted clearly on arrival, with small voluntary donations directly backing the village committee funds.

Public transport links are surprisingly efficient thanks to the proximity to the coast. You can take a direct train to Scarborough Railway Station. From the main station town interchange, the frequent East Yorkshire Bus 128 service (Scarborough to Helmsley route) stops directly within the heart of the village trail footprint.
