With a heritage spanning over 180 years, the Whitby Regatta holds the title of the oldest sea regatta on the North East coast. Originating in 1840 as a friendly challenge between local fisherman, it has grown into a massive four-day coastal festival drawing more than 20,000 spectators to the cliff tops, harbour piers, and beaches of Whitby every August.
Locked in for Saturday 8th to Monday 10th August 2026, the festival combines high-stakes sea rowing races with a jammed packed entertainment schedule across West Cliff, including vintage car rallies, funfairs, aerial displays, fancy dress parades, and a famous Monday evening fireworks display over the harbour.
What to Expect Across the Weekend 🚣♂️🚗
The regatta's action takes place both on the water and across the West Cliff headland:
- Rowing & Maritime Races: Local rowing clubs—including Whitby Fishermen's Amateur Rowing Club and Whitby Friendship Amateur Rowing Club—compete alongside visiting North East teams for coveted trophies like the historic Wilson Cup (first awarded in 1901).
- Vintage & Classic Vehicle Displays: West Cliff and Crescent Gardens host classic car rallies, post-war motorcycle displays, and vintage commercial vehicles.
- Parades & Family Entertainment: Monday features the hugely popular Fancy Dress Judging and walking float parade winding through town, alongside funfairs, dog shows, and live music near the bandstand.
- Grand Finale Fireworks: The festival culminates on Monday night at 9:45 PM with a stunning fireworks display launched over Whitby Harbour, illuminating the piers and Whitby Abbey.

Admission Cost

Best Viewing Spots
West Cliff (near the Captain Cook monument) offers unbeatable elevated views of the sea rowing course. For the Monday fireworks, line the harbour piers or East Cliff near Whitby Abbey.
Dog Friendly
Dogs are welcome on leads throughout outdoor spectator areas, though crowds on the West Cliff and harbour piers get extremely dense during peak hours.
Visitor Tip
Monday evening is by far the busiest time of the weekend. If you plan to watch the 9:45 PM fireworks, secure your viewing spot on West Cliff or the Harbour piers by 8:30 PM!

🚗 Driving & Park & Ride (Recommended)
Town centre car parks fill up very early during regatta weekend. Visitors driving via the A171 are strongly advised to use the Whitby Park & Ride (YO21 1TL) on the outskirts of town, which drops passengers directly at West Cliff.
🚆 By Bus & Train
Direct Northern Rail trains run along the scenic Esk Valley Line into Whitby Station. The famous Coastliner 840 bus service links Leeds and York directly to Whitby bus station, a 5-minute walk from harbour viewing areas.
