South Yorkshire's Free Light Festival & Art Trail.
Posted on 23rd August 2026
South Yorkshire's largest free annual light art festival returns as Barnsley Bright Nights lights up Barnsley town centre on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st November 2026. Running daily from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM, the ninth edition of the festival transforms the town centre with large-scale light installations, pop-up performances, and community artworks.
2026 Theme: 'Between Earth and Sky' 🌌✨
Delivered by Barnsley Council's Arts & Events team in partnership with Light Up The North, the festival showcases light art that connects community, nature, and technology:
💡 Light Art Trail Across the Town Centre
The 2026 event takes inspiration from the natural world and Barnsley's status as the UK's first designated Tech Town. Visitors can explore an illuminated trail featuring interactive light sculptures, digital projections, and pop-up street performances across key pedestrian locations.
FREE ADMISSION TO ALL INSTALLATIONSFeature Highlight: The Yorkshire Roses at The Seam 🌹💡
A major focal point for the 2026 festival is the landmark public artwork situated in the heart of Barnsley's digital campus:
📍 The Seam Digital Campus
Standing at 12m and 15m high, the three steel Yorkshire Roses sculptures incorporate programmable light and sound. During Bright Nights 2026, the structures host a bespoke, commissioned light-and-sound installation responding directly to the 'Between Earth & Sky' theme.
