Step beyond the legend of Guy Fawkes and into the city where it all began. Opening on 16th September 2026, a major new exhibition titled The Gunpowder Plot: York’s Untold Story arrives at the historic Bar Convent, offering a unique retelling of one of the most dramatic events in British history.

Set against the turbulent backdrop of post-Reformation York, the exhibition explores the events surrounding 5th November 1605. Crucially, the story is brought to life within the very walls of the Bar Convent—established in the shadows of the plot when the Catholic faith was still strictly illegal.

Context, Conspiracy, and Consequence 📜🏛️

Many key figures of the conspiracy called York home, and the exhibition uses rare objects, brand-new interpretation, and human storytelling to reveal how the plot echoed across the country:

  • Rare Historical Artefacts: View incredible items, including the poignant cross of Edward Oldcorne, who was hanged, drawn, and quartered in the aftermath of the plot.
  • The Legacy of Margaret Clitherow: Discover items linked to Margaret Clitherow, whose brutal execution is widely considered a pivotal catalyst for the plotters.
  • The Founders' Story: Explore how the fallout shaped the lives of the courageous women who founded the remarkable Bar Convent house in its wake.

Special Events Programme 🗓️🕯️

A series of exclusive events and activities complement the exhibition run:

  • Museum Lates (Tuesday 3 November, from 6pm): Experience after-hours access to the exhibition in a unique evening setting. Ticketed event (includes an alcoholic or soft drink). Tickets go on sale from 1st October.
  • Lunchtime Talk: The Gunpowder Crucifix (5 November, 1pm): Delve deeper into Edward Oldcorne’s crucifix—the only survivor of the raids on Catholic properties following the plot. Included in exhibition admission (allow 20–30 minutes).
  • The Gunpowder Plot Walking Trail: Walk in the footsteps of the conspirators on a self-guided trail through York's historic streets, visiting key landmarks. Free.
