Wander through towering stone archways cast in shadow and hear haunting choral harmonies echo through the ancient Cellarium! The National Trust’s legendary autumn spectacle, Fountains by Floodlight, returns to Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal near Ripon across selected October dates in 2026.

A long-standing autumn tradition at Fountains Abbey, this popular after-dark experience transforms the UNESCO World Heritage Site into an atmospheric evening setting. Visitors can explore the illuminated 12th-century Cistercian abbey ruins, enjoy guided twilight walks, listen to live choirs echoing in the Cellarium, and warm up with local street food.

Note for returning visitors: Following successful test runs in 2025 and earlier years, 2026 features updated timed arrival slots and brand-new projected animation displays cast directly onto the abbey ruins.

Fountains by Floodlight 2026 takes place on the following selected October evenings:

  • Friday 9th & Saturday 10th October 2026
  • Friday 16th & Saturday 17th October 2026
  • Friday 23rd & Saturday 24th October 2026
  • Thursday 29th & Friday 30th October 2026 (Half-term dates)

What to expect during your evening:

  • New Animated Story Projections: Striking projected animations bringing the history of Fountains Abbey to life against the historic stone walls.
  • Choral Performances: Live choral sets echoing inside the majestic, vaulted Cellarium (performances at 6:30pm and 7:45pm).
  • Abbey Guided Evening Tours: Guided walks led by knowledgeable volunteers departing from Porter’s Lodge at 6:00pm and 7:15pm.
  • Mill Yard Street Food Market: Hot food and drinks serving from 5:30pm, located near the main ruins.

Opening Hours & Entry Slots

Admissions open 5:00pm (Last entry 8:00pm, event closes 9:00pm).
Arrivals are structured in 30-minute timed slots. Note: Daytime tickets do not cover evening entry as the estate closes at 4:00pm to clear.

Bring a torch to help navigate dark paths between illuminated zones, warm autumn clothing, and sturdy footwear.

Accessibility

Main pathways between the Visitor Centre and Abbey are gravelled and accessible, though some ruined areas feature uneven ground and cobblestones.

Allow around 15 minutes upon arrival to park and walk down from the Visitor Centre admissions gate to the abbey ruins!

Signposted off the B6265 from Ripon (4 miles) or the A1(M). Free parking is provided at the main Visitor Centre car park (car parks close at 9:30pm).

The nearest main railway station is Harrogate or Thirsk. Local bus services (822) run from Ripon bus station to the estate entrance during daytime hours.
