Every October, the UK’s largest annual light and arts festival completely takes over the streets, landmarks, and indoor spaces of Leeds city centre. For two autumnal evenings, international artists, local performers, and technicians transform the urban landscape into a massive, open-air gallery filled with light sculptures, 3D architectural projections, and interactive soundscapes.

Returning on Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th October 2026, Leeds Light Night offers a completely free cultural experience for all ages. Spanning multiple central zones, visitors can navigate from bustling high-street spectacles to quiet, atmospheric indoor heritage installations after dark.

What to Expect Across the City 💡🎭

The festival footprint is vast, featuring dozens of individual artworks that combine advanced illumination technology with live performance.

• Architectural Projection Mapping: Iconic landmarks—such as Leeds Town Hall, the Corn Exchange, and Leeds Civic Hall—become moving canvases for vibrant, story-driven 3D laser projections.
• Interactive Installations: Scattered across city squares, visitors can manipulate light sculptures through touch, sound, or movement, making it particularly engaging for groups and curious young minds.
• Street Performances & Music: Illuminated roving performers, glowing percussion bands, and pop-up choir performances fill the pedestrianized shopping thoroughfares like Briggate and Commercial Street.

The Key Festival Zones 🗺️

To help navigate the sheer volume of art, the city is divided into easily walkable geographic zones, each with its own central hub.

• Millennium Square Zone: Traditionally the heart of the large-scale projection shows and food village stalls.
• Town Hall & Library Zone: Home to immersive indoor sound experiences, heritage building tours, and quiet reading installations.
• Briggate & Victoria Zone: High-energy street theatre, hanging light arcades, and large-scale inflatable sculptures embedded in shopping districts.
• South Bank & Docks Zone: Waterfront reflections along the River Aire, featuring floating installations near the Royal Armouries and Trinity Bridge.

Terrain & Accessibility

The vast majority of outdoor sites are on flat city pavements. Accessible indoor venue routes and dedicated viewing platforms are signposted.

You will do a significant amount of walking between central zones! Wear comfortable footwear, dress warmly for autumn evening temperatures and plan your route ahead of time. More details will be released in the run up to the event.

🚗 By Car & Park & Ride

City centre parking fills rapidly during Light Night. Drivers are strongly advised to use the Leeds Park & Ride sites at Elland Road, Stourton, or Temple Green. Express buses drop off directly on the edge of the festival zones without the hassle of gridlocked multi-storeys.

🚆 By Train & Bus

Leeds Station sits right in the heart of the festival footprint, making rail the easiest travel option. Major bus services run continually into the central bus station and City Square until late both evenings.
