Uncover hidden spaces and discover the fascinating people who built the Steel City! From 11th to 20th September 2026, Sheffield Heritage Open Days returns with over 100 completely free events hosted across the city, celebrating England’s largest annual festival of history and culture.
Coordinated by the Sheffield Civic Trust, this year’s theme—Everyday Histories—invites visitors of all ages to explore how ordinary Sheffielders lived, worked, and played in times gone by[cite: 1]. Expect rare behind-the-scenes building tours, industrial heritage sites, guided street art walks, and family archaeology digs.

- Sheffield Town Hall Behind-the-Scenes: Explore Grade I listed Victorian council chambers, sit on the Lord Mayor’s throne, and attend special talks on the Sheffield Blitz and From Shtetl to Steel City.
- Bobby on the Beat (Surrey Street): Step inside Sheffield’s last surviving police box alongside vintage police vehicles and pop-up exhibits from the National Emergency Services Museum.
- Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet: Tour this wonderfully preserved 18th-century crucible steel works and see where grinders, forgemen, and blacksmiths produced Sheffield’s famous steel.
- Streets in the Sky at Park Hill: Take a guided architectural tour through Grade II* listed Park Hill flats with sweeping views across the city skyline.
- The Old Head Post Office (Fitzalan Square): Go behind the scenes at Sheffield’s Edwardian sorting office, telephone exchange, and counter hall.

Visitors driving to city centre venues are advised to use central NCP car parks (Q-Park Charles Street or Rockingham Street). For suburban sites like Abbeydale or General Cemetery, nearby street parking is available.
