Sowerby Bridge Rushbearing Festival
16-Foot Rushcarts, Clog Dancing and 50th Anniversary Celebrations.
Posted on 30th July 2026
One of the most singular and colorful living traditions in Northern England, the Sowerby Bridge Rushbearing Festival brings centuries of Yorkshire heritage alive across Calderdale. Centred around a magnificent 16-foot high, two-wheeled thatched Rushcart, the weekend sees a team of 60 local men in clogs and Panama hats haul the cart across seven towns and villages, accompanied by musicians, Edwardian supporters, and dozens of Morris dancing troupes.
Locked in for Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th September 2026, this year marks a landmark moment as the festival celebrates its 50th anniversary since its modern revival in 1977. Spectators line the hilltops, village greens, and local pub stops as the procession travels from Warley to Ripponden.
What is the Rushbearing Tradition? πΎπͺ΅
The festival roots date back centuries to when church floors consisted of little more than stone flags or beaten earth. Each late summer, fresh rushes were cut to replace the old winter floor coverings. In typical Yorkshire fashion, this seasonal chore naturally evolved into an annual excuse for music, dancing, and merrymaking.
- The Towering Rushcart: Thatchers spend over a week constructing the 16-foot-tall, handsomely decorated rushcart. A team of ladies takes turns riding perched high atop the rushes during the procession.
- The Pulling Team: Sixty local men dressed in white shirts, black trousers, Panama hats, and traditional clogs pull the heavy cart using sturdy ropes.
- Morris Dancing & Music: Top UK Morris sides, mummers, and brass musicians perform at every church, inn, and cricket club stop along the route.
- Church Ceremonies: Symbolizing the traditional delivery, rush bundles are presented to local parish churches along the weekend path.
