If you are looking for a completely unique, wonderfully eccentric, and quintessentially British day out this summer, make a beeline for the North Coast. The legendary Peasholm Park Naval Warfare—affectionately known as the Battle of Peasholm—is back for its 2026 summer season!

For over almost a century, war has broken out three times a week on the tranquil, oriental-themed boating lake in the heart of Scarborough's North Bay. This half-hour miniature sea battle features a fleet of 20-foot replica boats, steering hidden pilots through a chaotic flurry of pyrotechnics, smoke bombs, and dramatic sound effects. It is loud, theatrical, deeply nostalgic, and a fantastic, budget-friendly watch for families of all generations.

Musicians in the island bandstand will wlecome spectators as they arrive for the show.

The Fleet Assembles 🚢

At exactly 3:00 PM prompt, the smoke flares are lit, the sirens wail, and the miniature armada sails out from behind the secret island channels. The 20-foot wooden boats are mostly modeled on World War I and World War II vessels—including dreadnoughts, destroyers, and a prominent aircraft carrier.

Listen to the narrator tell the story, while watching the boats as the story unfolds in a panto-esque theatrical style.

• The Secret Pilots: The boats are completely under human control! Each vessel is carefully maneuvered by a hidden pilot sitting cramped inside the hull, looking out through tiny slits to dodge oncoming fire and navigate the shallow lake.
• The Land-Based Assault: The action isn't just on the water. Keep an eye on the island's towering pagoda and the surrounding cliffs—land-based fortresses join the fray, exchanging "missile strikes" (loud firecrackers and rockets) with the ships below. The "airforce" may also make an appearance!
• The Dramatic Finale: The 30-minute display builds to an explosive crescendo. As the sinister submarine makes a surprise appearance, resulting in a dramatic, smoke-filled air and sea bombardment where vessels are "sunk" amid giant splashes from hidden underwater jets.

Plan Your Visit

• 2026 Event Dates: Saturday 27th June (Armed Forces Day Special) through to Monday 31st August 2026.
• Weekly Schedule:
  • 4th July – 18th July: Every Saturday only.
  • 20th July – 31st August: Every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday.
• Performance Timings: Gates open early with live music starting from 2:30pm. The sea battle begins promptly at 3:00pm and lasts for approximately 30 minutes.
• Cost & Tickets: Access to the wider park is free, but tickets for the lakeside grandstand seating are available on the gate only CASH required (no advance booking):
  • Adults: £5.50
  • Under 16s: £2.50
  • Family Ticket (2 Adults + 2 Under 16s): £14.50
• Top Tip: Because grandstand tickets cannot be bought online, queues start forming early on sunny August days. Aim to arrive by 2:15pm to secure the best front-row seats right by the water's edge!

Getting There

Location: Peasholm Park, Columbus Ravine, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, YO12 7TR.

By Train 🚂

Scarborough Railway Station is the main terminal serving the coast, offering direct links from York, Leeds, and Hull. Peasholm Park is roughly a 20-to-25 minute walk from the station through the town centre, or you can catch the frequent No. 844 BeachLink bus from outside the station directly to the park gates.

By Open-Top Bus 🚌

If you're already in town, the most scenic way to arrive is via the Scarborough Open Top Buses (Service 109). They run continuously along the seafront, linking the South Bay amusements and the harbor directly to the Peasholm Park entrance in the North Bay.

By Car & Parking 🚗

Scarborough can get incredibly busy during peak summer holidays. If you choose to drive, it is highly recommended to arrive in town early.

• Closest Car Park: The Northstead Manor Drive / Burniston Road Car Park is located directly opposite the north entrance of the park. It operates on a pay-and-display basis.
• Alternative Parking: On-street disc parking zone spaces are available along Columbus Ravine and Peasholm Drive, but check local signage carefully for time restrictions and required parking discs (available free from local shops).
