If you are looking for a fantastic family day out packed with history, games, and a healthy dose of nostalgia, head over to York Castle Museum this summer. Running from 22nd June to 6th September, the museum is exploring a fun, usual but seasonal question: who did summer better—the grand Victorians or the swinging 1960s?

From bustling community spectacles of the nineteenth century to the groovy soundtrack of a twentieth-century cultural revolution, this year’s immersive summer programme contrasts two entirely different eras in British history. Best of all, all the seasonal activities, crafts, and live entertainment are included in your general admission ticket (which lets you pay once and visit free for a whole year)!

Team Victorian: The Grand York Galas 🎩

Step onto Kirkgate—the museum's world-famous recreated indoor Victorian street—and you’ll find it transformed into a nineteenth-century celebration. The museum is reviving the spirit of the historic York Gala, a massive annual summer tradition that brought joy to the city for over 60 years starting back in 1859.

Expect to see Kirkgate beautifully adorned with colorful bunting and seasonal floral displays. The entire street is enhanced by upgraded soundscapes, projections, and an updated day-to-night light cycle to make you feel like you've genuinely stepped out on a dreamy summer eveningrecreate the feeling of excitement of the York Gala.

  • Castle Kitchen Treats: See live cookery demonstrations featuring authentic picnic recipes from the legendary Mrs. Beeton, including Balmoral tarts and tea cream. Every Saturday from 27 June – 25 July, then every Wednesday and Saturday from 29 July – 5 September 2026
  • Creative Hot Air Balloons: Work alongside professional artists on Saturdays to craft your own colorful paper hot air balloon creation, surrounded by a stunning paper-cut art installation by Yorkshire artist Pippa Dyrlaga.

Team 1960s: Swinging Music & Flower Power ✌️

The 1960s was a monumental decade for York, bringing youth culture, Beatlemania, and the founding of the university to the historic walled city. The museum brings this sun-soaked era of freedom and "flower power" to life using nostalgic displays, iconic objects, and classic British play.

  • Sounds Of The Sixties: Take a trip back to the swinging sixties as live music fills the Sixties Street with the soundtrack of a generation. From folk favourites to chart-topping classics, experience the music that defined a decade. Every Saturday from 25 July – 22 August 2026
  • Retro Toys & Nostalgia: Show the kids how summer holidays used to look with displays of Mary Quant fashion, Dansette record players, Lambretta scooters, and iconic childhood toys from the era.
  • The Outdoor Exercise Yard: Take a break in the fresh air at the museum’s open-air Exercise Yard, which transforms for the summer holidays into a playground for retro outdoor games and activities suitable for all generations.

Alongside the great summer showdown, your admission gives you full access to the museum's fascinating permanent galleries and daily interactive extras:

  • Time Traveller's Activity Trail: Pick up an interactive trail booklet at the admissions desk to guide the kids on a hunt through historical objects.
  • Sensory Chocolate Stations: Explore York's famous confectionery past in the Sugar, Skill and Shiftwork community exhibit, featuring interactive stations where you can experience the sights, noises, and sweet smells of the city's historic chocolate factories.
  • Notorious Prison Cells: Descend into the original 18th-century prison buildings to join daily Cells Talks, learning about the building's history and its most infamous inmates, including the highwayman Dick Turpin.

  • Opening Times: Open daily. Monday 11am – 5pm, Tuesday to Sunday 10am – 5pm.
  • Cost: All summer events and workshops are completely INCLUDED in the standard museum general admission ticket. Tickets automatically convert into a 12-month annual pass, allowing you to return for free as many times as you like.

  • Best For: Multi-generational family days out. Grandparents will love the 1960s nostalgia, toddlers will love the colors on Kirkgate, and older kids can dive into the prison cells and crafts.

York Castle Museum is located right in the heart of York city centre. It is roughly a 15-minute walk from York Railway Station through the beautiful historic streets, or you can hop on one of the frequent city buses that drop off near Clifford's Tower.

By Car & Parking 🚗

Driving into central York can be busy during the school summer holidays, so using the city's excellent Park & Ride services is highly recommended.

  • Parking: If you choose to drive right into the centre, the closest public car park is the Castle Car Park, located immediately adjacent to the museum.
